And the govt knew it was happening and allowed the handing out sub-prime mortgages to continue among other questionable practices. And I would bet many Congresspeople were benefitting financially off of these practices.Teetime wrote:Not really.
It was a global recession. Our government didn’t help to avoid it but the cause was really over leveraging debt by businesses in search of higher investment returns.

It wasn’t. But my point was that all of our lives are far far better today than they were 12 years ago.
I don’t feel like going through the causes of the Great Recession again.

Dusty beat me to the point I was going to make about the sub prime mortgage crisis of 2008. They gave out loans to a lot of folks who were never going to pay them back.

But my question was are we better off because of the government or because of our own actions? In my life, the government has done very little to improve my life. I am only better off because of my personal and financial decisions. As for my job, I could argue they have not made it better but made it worse but I am very happy in the career I chose and in the district I am working for.

Re: R.I.P. Republican Party
The government did extraordinary things, some that had never been tried to drag our economy out of that recession.
Did it cost money? Yes.
Money was the tool that helped bring about that recovery and it was not just our government, but many governments around the globe that took similar steps in varying degrees.

Re: R.I.P. Republican Party
Just spending money is a temporary fix, the real fix is in policy changes to prevent it from happening again, which they did, and that was the real solutionTeetime wrote:The government did extraordinary things, some that had never been tried to drag our economy out of that recession.

And the past 3 years, we were doing extremely well and seeing year over year growth in most sectors of the economy and helping to pay back that money we spent. Imagine where we would be today if COVID didn't happen.

We were NOT paying back the borrowed money. Never in the Trump administration did we pay down any debt in spite of the improving economy.

I should have been more clear in my "paying back spent money," I didn't meant the govt specifically but the every day citizens paying back their loans.

I never heard of that guy but when I clicked on him it said his Twitter account was suspended.
What did he do?

Re: R.I.P. Republican Party
I'm sure your reliable CNN didn't carry this story. I posted late last week but he is a left wing activist that was egging on the other Insurrectionists. I thought they were all just Trumpers the guess not.

As of 11 pm last night it wasn't suspended. I guess Twitter bowed to the pressure from some of the media, probably not CNN.

I don't know where you guys got the idea I watch CNN, I don't think I have ever claimed any special allegiance to CNN.
I will watch them every once in a while, but only if there is something boring on MSNBC.
I mostly watch YouTube videos of guys equiping their wood shops. When I retire I'm going to become a woodworker.

I think I did poop an actual rainbow this morning. Maybe it was the chili.

Well I know one thing, if our country doesn’t learn the importance of compromise we’re going to continue this downward trend that we’re in now.

Good luck with that. Seems the Dems idea of uniting thus far is re-educating and deprogramming their way to unity. You know, Stalin and Hitler type stuff.OSUBucks wrote:Well I know one thing, if our country doesn’t learn the importance of compromise we’re going to continue this downward trend that we’re in now.

Re: R.I.P. Republican Party
Hey, speaking of the "cancel culture"....someone, somewhere was speaking of that....
FOX news had a political analyst named Chris Stirewalt that was pretty right down the middle. He got canned this week because of the viewer blowback when he defended FOX's call that Biden had indeed won Arizona on election night (or shortly thereafter).
He was defending the network's CORRECT call of the election.
Viewers couldn't stomach being told the truth. He had to go.

Oh, and the pardons, was someone talking about those?

Trump pardons Sloppy Steve Bannon but leaves his co-conspirator, a disabled wheelchair bound veteran, Brian Kolfage twisting in the wind. Is anyone surprised?

Re: R.I.P. Republican Party
Last night, under the cover of the pardon fiasco, Trump rescinded his 2017 Executive Order (that he bragged about at the time) that prevented those leaving his administration from lobbying the government for a five year period after departure.
Now they can start the lobbying today.
That's really cleaning up the swamp.

Re: R.I.P. Republican Party
No President in memory has abused the Presidential power to pardon like Trump. He pardoned Brian Urlacher’s brother too. Urlacher recently visited the White House and spoke to Trump. It worked as days later Trump pardoned his brother.

Don't act like Trump is the only president to abuse their pardon power. I'm sure the media will use these last presidential acts as another way to smear the Trump presidency but many presidents have abused this power. Clinton pardoned his brother who was arrested a few weeks later, he also pardoned Patty Hearst, both of these people were not pardoned for undue justice but rather their social status. He also pardoned linton pardoned billionare fugitive Marc Rich after his ex-wife, Denise Rich, lavishly donated to Democrats. Trump did pardon an 64-year-old African-American grandmother who was serving a life sentence for non-violent drug offenses when Obama overlooked her account when pardoning or commuting sentences for over 2,000 pardons/commutations for drug offenses. Obama also commuted the sentence for traitor Chelsea Manning and terrorist Lopez Rivera.

Whataboutism to the nth degree.
The self serving-pardons signed by Trump eclipse the self-serving pardons by the previous 15 Presidents added together.
Manning had served 7 years and Rivera (a Bronze Star recipient) had served 35 years.
