Wanted to brag up my kid a bit. He has had a really good summer so far. He's 16 and going into his junior year. Weighs about 195 and is around 5'9". Will play OL/DL (maybe some LB) this year. Was also a sectional qualifier in wrestling last year as a sophomore and is a competitive powerlifter.

Here's a couple recent weight room videos:

Squat: 425lbs x 1

Trap Bar Dead Lift 555lbs

Bench Press: 225lbs x 13 reps

Bench Press: 300lbs x1 (done powerlifting style with a pause at the bottom)

45" Box Jump

Snatch: 185lbs x 1

I have been reaching out to some D3 schools but if any of you guys know any coaches, football or wrestling, please feel free to pass along to them. He has a 3.71 cumulative GPA but hasn't taken the SAT or ACT yet so I don't have a score on those. He wants to study engineering.

Thank you.

That is the work-out room at Delta's house.

It's sweet.

Don't know the coach there, but I'm happy to promote my D3 alma mater, St. Norbert.

Here is their football Facebook page: SNC football FB page
And their football web page:  SNC football web page

Really solid program.  Super competitive in the Midwest Conference, which itself is probably an averaqe conference for football.  Benefits to you would be away games against relatively close conference opponents like Monmouth, Beloit, Knox, Cornell, Illinois College, Grinnell, and U of Chicago.   Non conference opponents the past few years have included Aurora, North Park, North Central, Carthage, and Benedictine.

Not too far, but far enough?

That's our high school weight room.

I don't have official times for the 40, 3-cone, or shuttle. Last year in PE, he ran a 4.75 40 but that was probably timed by Coach Quickthumb on a 38-yard course... Laughing

Yes. Great facility. Better than my college weight room. Only criticism I have is they don't let us use chalk.

Engineering should really focus his search.

Please do not let him do the 3-2 programs so many small liberal arts colleges talk about. I know several kids who started that way and a few that even made it through. None were particularly thrilled with the experience. All the CCIW schools for the most part will try to sell this to him. If you are really leaning towards one of these schools get them to provide stats for how many of those kids make it through the combined programs in 5 years and what their cost is. If you do that, I think you will see why I consider it a poor choice.

Some quality small Engineering programs with D3 football programs:
Rose-Hulman - Terre Haute, Indiana - quality small school that produces quality engineers.
University of Wisconsin Platteville
University of Wisconsin Stout

If he rocks the SAT he should be looking at
Washington University in St. Louis

I know first hand these schools produce engineers who have managed to play football for four years.

When you are looking at schools - check out their rosters - do they have any senior football players with engineering majors? Ask if you could talk to one of those players. Ask the coaches about the challenges of being an engineering major and a football player - although I would trust a player's information more highly.

Any D3 program is going to take him on their roster for the most part. Kid is a stud. Sending film of his incredible lifts and his football field highlights don't really matter that much. The key is to find an academic school that matches his life goals and fits your family's financial situation.

Good luck!

Sound advice from OT.

A couple of other D3 football schools with engineering majors along the lines of Wash U would be Case Western Reserve in Cleveland and Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh.

that is some of the best advice I have seen given....ever

pick the school for the academics, if he can play a sport cool.

I did the opposite and got very lucky that things worked out for me the way they did. I picked a school to play a sport (4 games) and wound up loving the school and academics. Stressing though that I got lucky.

Great advice! Rose-Hulman was the first school that I thought of. They have become very competitive in the Indiana conference they play in, and sniffing national relevance. It would be a great choice for an engineer/football kid. I tried to steer my nephew there, but he decided on finance and no football...so he went to Illinois St.

I have 2 former players at Rose Hulman. They absolutely love it. My dad had several engineers working for him from Rose Hulman when he had his firm in Champaign.

I did email the coach at Rose-Hulman. They have a junior day in the spring. We will have to check that out.

Incidentally, my kid competed in a powerlifting meet this weekend. He lifted in the Teen 16-17 Raw division (he just turned 16 at the end of May) in the 90kg weight class and went 200/137.5/227.5 for a 565kg total. His squat, bench, dead lift, and total all broke state AAPF records for his division and weight class and his squat and total broke the AAPF national record for his division and weight clas.

Exciting day...he had his first 300lbs bench press and 500lbs dead lift in competition and set a 28lbs PR on his squat.

I absolutely love that your son can keep his butt on the bench when lifting. I can't stand seeing kids (and adults) who "bench" with their butt 10" up in the air. Disciplined form = better results. Awesome job.

Yep. It's a big issue with many of our kids. They literally power clean the weight off their chest. Not a bench press when that happens.

Powerlifting rules for bench: Feet have to remain in contact with the floor and can't move from the initial position. Buttocks must remain in contact with the bench. Bar must come to a complete stop before a "Press" command is given.

Guys whose butt comes way off the bench...you can easily subtract 15-20 pounds off what they say they bench.

Thanks, net.

We were really hoping that he would get a chance to play running back this year but it just isn't going to happen. Sounds like he is going to play center and defensive line or some linebacker this year instead.
