Must be closer to home. He made a name for himself last year and surprised a lot of folks. Nice little run!
Congratulations to him. #RollScots

I know he was commuting a good distance to get to Canton. Maybe this move will allow him more time with his kids.

He was coaching at Peoria Heights?

They don't exactly keep people around terribly long historically.

Bet you are right.

He was the last one to take them to the playoffs. Maybe he can do it again. Good luck to Coach Goff.

If at this point the board DOESN'T approve this I would just go ahead and cancel the Lion football season.

I found it interesting that one board member still voted against the hire! Seemed odd to me.

Board member Blake Handley voted against the hire. A phone message left with Handley was not returned before The State Journal-Register deadline.

Anyone have The scoop on the school. I think they going into a new conference, what the cornbelt? As a Catholic school you think they would do better, what keeps them from being a competitor year in and year out? I know they are relatively new at football, maybe that's the issue.

The 5 Remaining Okaw schools and 5 remaining Cornbelt schools formed the Illini Prairie Conference I believe. I dont think they recruit as hard as maybe other schools do. Plenty of quality programs near by with St Joe Ogden, Tolono and Monticello. Pluck a kid or two out of those schools each year and get another 10-12 kids from the Champaign area and they should be in business. I have no idea what it costs to go there and if that is a factor. I think if they got somebody in there that really wanted to get after it they could become a major player.

Coach Hennessy is the Director of Buildings & Grounds, and he will remain in that position is my understanding.

STM will be apart of the new Illini-Prairie Conference with: STM, SJO, Unity, Monticello, Rantoul, Pontiac, Prairie Central, BCC, Olympia, and IVC. They have had football for 15 years, so I'm not sure the "new" program fits. They have made the playoffs 9 times (?), making their deepest run last fall. My take, as someone from their area, and who has coached against them....
- The school is costly. Non-Parish tuition is close to $11-12k. That's a lot for Champaign-Urbana.
- Their numbers are always low. Most years they don't have a freshman team, and some cases they have cancelled JV games as well. -
- They always seemed to attract some athletes, and have had numerous kids go on to play D1, D2, NAIA, D3 levels.
- Scheduling: Their conference games were tough, but they always seemed to schedule small schools for non-conf. games in an attempt to just get some wins. That doesn't prepare you for the Okaw, or even the SVC, and definitely won't help in the IPC.
- Consistency: You never knew what new "recruits" or students would show up year to year. This led to a lot of roster turn-over, and a lack of togetherness. Also, they never seemed to have a set philosophy on offense or defense from week to week. Sometimes they would be 5 wide, sometimes wishbone, but never a method to the madness. It just seemed like they threw things against the wall and see what stuck that week.
- Parents: There was A LOT of parental interference going on. A couple years ago, their star running back's dad had it out with Coach H. during halftime of a game. That kid then ended up transferring to Central. That's just one example.
- School support: STM has had a ton of success, but it's in other sports, and country club sports. In my opinion, football was something for students to do and go be social. They have a nice facility, but people really supported girls basketball, golf, tennis.

I think they will really struggle in the IPC, and maybe Dan had just had enough. He's a great guy, and I really respect him, but for some reason, football just hasn't taken off like people thought it would. I feel people thought it would immediately attract the best athletes and the draw for a Catholic HS in C-U was discussed for 30 years. That never happened, and just a few of the best athletes showed up. They were never able to put together multiple kids in multiple years to build on each other.

To sort of parrot what everyone else has said- Why pay money to go to an undeveloped private school program when you can go to one of the established better, free programs in the area with equal to or better than education? I mean, why pay 10k when you can go to St Joe, Tolono, Mahomet, Monticello, etc?

I know when they were really good at the beginning like 3 or 4 of their 5 linemen came from Monticello. Couple of their girls bball players came from their too. With Coach Welter getting the Sages rolling and the economy being what it is, that pipeline has been cut.

I don't see them getting that good. I mean, with the established programs around them able to keep home grown talent and being more of a destination right now there's that. And they are going to get killed in their new conference. I just don't see it happening.

Post by SIFBCoach7 Wed May 03, 2017 11:37 am

To build off my earlier comment, as I've been thinking about this, this morning...

STM never has had an identity. In football, at least. When you played STM, you knew there were certain players that you had to try and contain, but there was no gameplan to prepare for a scheme. Does that make sense? When you play SJO, you know you had (Duval years) to stop outside zone, counter, play-actions, and quick game. That was the staple. When you play Wilmington, you have to stop the sweep and counter, or you're dead. When you play Unity you have to play assignment football and stop the option (even in today's Hamilton spread). STM has no identity.

Just a few more thoughts on the matter.
