Took your advice and got out yesterday. Took a long walk, went to the hardware store, did yard work, saw tons of people out. Even inside Menard's people were observant of each other's personal space. About 60% wore face masks, myself included.
Not a single person mentioned that they were unhappy with the Governor's restrictions or was seen protesting the "governmental overreach". No protest signs, no swasticas, no traffic blocks no screaming or yelling.
Maybe I didn't turn down the right streets?

what about those in our communities who are far more susceptible to covid19 than you are? what's your level of concern for their health? for many of us, it isn't about US getting sick. it's about us potentially giving it to someone else who won't be able to handle it as well and the impact that would have on our health care system.

I know that when my kids have been fluish sick, we don't visit our older relatives. Why not follow the same guidelines here? For many, the steps being forced on them isn't worth the cost.
Here's a thought...you folks down south go right ahead and open up wide since you are feeling so safe from the virus. Those of us from up north in Chicagoland who want to pursue life, liberty, happiness, and generally let our freak flags fly in a quarantine-free zone with other freedom-loving folks will hop on I-57 or I-55, come down by y'all and contribute to the local economy. We'll stay in your hotels and motels featuring air conditioning and free HBO. We'll eat at your Cracker Barrels and Waffle Houses. Hope for your sake that none of us who make that trek are asymptomatic carriers of the virus.

Re: Coronavirus I
Those protesting the stay at home order here in Springfield are an extremely low minority. It is worrisome though to read articles like I read earlier today saying that we would need to test 20 million a day for a period of time before we can consider opening the economy. The article mentioned late July at the earliest. We don't have the chemicals needed to make large numbers of testing kits in our country. We would need to acquire them from China.
As of today the virus still hasn't hit us hard in Central Illinois. We've had 4 fatalities in Sangamon county and Springfield alone has over 110,000 people.

Restaurants are curb-side and delivery only, but you can do the rest of that in Iowa right now if you want to. And, you're more than welcome to.

Curb-side and delivery only...unless they have totally shut down. If some counties are allowed to open things (like restaurants, for example) back up while other neighboring counties remain in lock down mode, or if government in one state thinks that a big river or a state line is enough to keep their state safe and operating business as usual while the state next door is sheltering in place, then I think you will absolutely see situations where people from lock down areas will be traveling across the river or across state and county lines to go to the open casinos or restaurants or fireworks stores or wherever. In the absence of ubiquitous testing for the virus and/or for antibodies, nobody knows who is a carrier or who is safe. But, hey, let's not let something like that infringe upon our personal liberties for more than several weeks, right?
Check out the time lapse video below of how the number of confirmed covid19 cases spread from north to south in Italy. The northern area was hit first and the country reacted by first quarantining individual towns, and later shutting down the northern area and then a nationwide lockdown. Before the shut down took place, people from those northern areas are the ones who infected people in the southern areas in a cascading effect. Either they were the ones who traveled to the restriction free south, or people from the south found their way into the north. There is no other way to explain the progression of the virus within that peninsula nation. This is a perfect example of how the government's decision to take half-measures was directly responsible for the progression of the virus within the country.

Re: Coronavirus I
There is definitely an increasing number of people who are growing frustrated with the stay at home order. I believe it had more to do with not being at work and not being able to provide for their families. At some point, the negative effects the economy will have on people will outweigh keeping the risk the virus poses for many people in the population. One article I saw about Michigan stated that you cannot buy seeds for your garden or have a heart procedure, but you can get an abortion. I think part of the people’s frustration comes from the application of what is essential and not essential. Dicks Sporting goods, non essential but Mattress Firm is essential, explain that one.
As a teacher I think it will be a real possibility that school attendance will be optional at the beginning of next year and we will have to have our online lessons available for students who are worried about attending school.
On a side note, one of my friends fathers passed away last week because of a stroke he suffered over a month ago. His death is being counted as a Covid 19 death because he was in the ICU. Had no outward signs of Covid and tested negative 1 day before his death. I guess hospitals get more fed money and resources because of Covid deaths.

Your first paragraph is a much better way of saying what I've been trying to. I'm all for caution and being mindful of others. That being said, there is no consistency (or maybe logic is a better word) in what businesses are considered essential and which ones are not.

If you are suggesting that Covid19 deaths are being over counted, consider that, up until a week or so ago, state governments were only supposed to be counting covid related deaths when the case was confirmed through testing. People who died with covid symptoms, but were not tested (especially those who died at home or in long term care facilities), were not counted as covid deaths. We are talking about the real death toll being thousands of deaths short of what it really is. The U.S. is not alone in that respect. Around the world, we're talking about tens of thousands of deaths that have gone unreported as covid deaths.

Re: Coronavirus I
This article was posted February 6. My wife was sick the week of Valentine's Day. Her school and many others in the region were hit very hard with the "flu" for about 2 weeks before then. Problem was, almost none of the kids in her school or my kid's school tested positive for the flu. Classes resumed at UofI January 21st and students started returning to campus January 13th.

Joy Zhu is studying accounting as a sophomore here and is one of about 150 students from the city of Wuhan, where the outbreak was first detected. She recently returned to campus after spending winter break at home with her parents. Her flight back to Illinois left Wuhan just one day before Chinese officials quarantined the city.
