Only about 15 years too late.  Heading to see Sevendust tonight but I will definitely check out the new Tool album on my drive down there.
New album isn't out until August 30th.

15 years? I don't think anyone had streaming in 2004. Razz

They were on Pandora until about November of last year, that's where I really started to get into them. I never really understood why they took them off them after having been on there so long and just to put it back last night.

I just saw that. I am not in a quiet enough environment to digest it yet. From my little preview, it sounds like Tool. Which is all I can ask.

i've heard it. turbo plays it every hour. that being said, i've heard it 5 or 6 times. very slow start, but incredible drumming happening like every tool song.

Neal, When you call them act like the last thing you want to do is re-subscribe. They will eventually offer you about $35 for 6 months.

I have heard this as well. Basically, the version I was told was they'll try to talk you out of it, but once you say, "No thanks. I really just called to cancel my service" a couple times, they give you a sweet deal.

wolverine is right on. Neal when you call, just say that you are calling to cancel your subscription and that you enjoy the service but just cutting expenses. They will offer you a semi sweet deal but make sure you decline..trust me the last couple of times that I have done this they eventually get to a 6 month for $35 deal.

It's pretty much all I have listened to for the last two weeks. Danny Carey's masterpiece, as far as I am concerned.

I was never a huge Tool fan... but this album is really, really good. I really dig Pneuma, Chocolate Chip Trip & 7empest.

I agree 100%. To me, Maynard seemed to dial it in on this one. Very uninspiring on his end but the Jones and Carey nail it on this one. A student of mine said it reminds him of what modern elevator music should sound like.

I have always respected insanely technical heavy
metal drumming. I love listening to guys like Mike Portney, Joey Jordison, and Jason Rullo but Carey sets a new bar on this album. It's amazing.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the whole thing yet, so I'll give some of it a listen during my 5K tomorrow. I wasn't too impressed with Fear Inoculum but really like 7empest.

Yeah. Agreed. The lyrics are great. Reminds me of those old-timey photographs of beat-up NFL players at the end of their careers. Like this:

"Fear Inoculum" is also great. The intro is really sinister sounding...gives the impression that the song is going to kick ass all of a sudden but then it backs off. Worth waiting for but you definitely need to be patient and give it a chance.

I've been thinking about the statement about Maynard a great deal lately because,  I mean, what else do I have to do from 1-4am?

I think Maynard's style perfectly fits their evolution as a band and through adulthood. Very loud, angry and aggressive on Opiate, Undertow and part of Aenima. More nuanced, interested in things outside himself and spirituality on parts of Aenima, and Lateralus. Very much quieter and spiritual and introspective of himself in the world on 10000 days. And this new one is an extension of that trend. Less me, more about those around me and very interested in legacy and their place in the world. It's really hard to scream about being a grizzled warrior on the verge of collapse.

Singers voices can change a lot of their careers, especially someone that screamed as much as Maynard and I think he quietly chooses when and where to go all out. Like an aging man has to in everything in life.

I also give them all the credit in the world for having the balls to change as a band. There's nothing worse than fat ass Vince Neil strutting around in spandex thinking he's still able to bang 20yr old pornstars after every show while singing the same party shit.

PS- Justin Chancellor is the the underlying driving force of their sound. His addition to the band during Aenima was a fantastic one. You don't realize until you seem them live how much of what you think are guitar parts are actually him playing bass.

You are definitely correct in this assessment. Chancellor is definitely one of my top 3 bassists behind Cliff Burton and Les Claypool (who I know is a bit weird but dude can play some bass), but he doesn't get the credit that he is deserving of.
