I think the fatality rate for the Coronavirus virus is currently higher than that of the seasonal flu. That only makes sense because millions of people around the world take a flu vaccine every year but there isn't a vaccine yet for the Coronavirus.
I'm confident in saying that if most Americans were tested for the Coronavirus the fatality rate would drop below 1%, probably closer to one half of one percent like it is in Germany.

Despite the title of the article, there is a lot of good news here. Just a little more than half the hospital beds in Illinois are full and almost three-quarters of the state's ventilators are still available for use.

Pritzker's "concerns" about having to extend the stay-at-home order are based on the worst-case scenarios, defined as what would have happened had he not issued the stay-at-home order. Given that, I think we are in good shape. In fact, I'm feeling really good about going back to school on April 8th. Just this past weekend, I thought school would be done for the year. Trump might be right...things are looking good for opening the country back up in time for Easter.

I like Dr. Fauci. I think he is very good at his job.

With that being said, is it just a teensy-weensy possibility that people like Dr. Fauci, in some kind of twisted, bizarro way, are a little disappointed that the pandemic has not been more severe? I mean...people like Dr. Fauci have trained their entire lives for this moment. I have to wonder if, six weeks ago, the scientists thought to themselves, "this is it...this is the big one!"

I mean...you know that these guys have watched all these movies numerous times each Laughing

I really hope you're right about this ending soon Delta. Most of the information I'm getting says that this hasn't peaked yet and that it might not peak for another 3 weeks. One Harvard Doctor said today that we will be dealing with this for another 12-18 months. If we don't have football this fall this crap will be getting real!

i get what you're saying. (kinda like major powers in heartbreak ridge in the scene where he thinks they are getting ready to go to war...only to find out it was just a drill. he was clearly disappointed).

dr. fauci strikes me as a level-headed guy who sticks to facts. and, i assume, based on the continuous rise in numbers of infected americans, he thinks we haven't seen the worst of the pandemic yet.

If this goes on 12-18 months we have much more to worry about than this disease or football season.

The football comment was mostly an effort to offer a little levity. It will kind of suck though if there's no football.

I know.

I do not think people realize what ramifications extending this panic indefinitely will have.

You don't think there will be major social, political and economic problems if this drags on that long?

This has the potential to make this country unrecognizable if it goes on a year to a year and a half. We're already pretty close to a tipping point.

This could be an extremely destabilizing event. Besides disease, you're talking economic depression, protests, the widening of the already chasm like political gap and a potential movement for new forms of governance. Most people already are dissatisfied with our form now- on one side or the other (look at the recent successes of socialists)- put people in poverty and this whole thing could crumble pretty quick.

Why do you think they're sending you a check?

Two weeks ago, it sounded like it was going to be way worse than a typical seasonal flu. Now, I don't think it will be.

I'll take a shot

I think most Americans (including me) support the current stimulus bill in Congress. Most Americans recognize that what we are dealing with is unprecedented in American history and are willing to trust the experts, many of whom were elected, to provide as soft of a cushion as possible. If you want to call that a temporary embrace of socialism, then I guess that is what it is.

But I also think that most Americans are smart enough to recognize that the free market is a positive force for the vast majority of people and once this crisis has been overcome, a return to free market principles is in the best interest of most Americans.

I agree with that.

Let me ask, delta, you say that what we are dealing with is “unprecedented in American history”, but in your previous response you said this looked like the regular seasonal flu. Which is it?

while i appreciate your optimism of a 4/8 return to school, i think you're totally wrong. imho, a return in mid-may is optimistic.

no research. no articles to quote.

as long as chicago continues to see rises, pritzker will keep kids home.

the first case in morgan county was an 84yo man(lives 4 miles from my house) which they have no idea how he contracted covid-19. the only scenario they can figure out is he was an election judge in a town of around 200 people. someone had to give it to him, but who? and who knows how many other people 'the carrier' has been in contact with.

and i said this on 3/27.

The virus has already cancelled a lot of sports events. I honestly just want life to go back to normal soon so I can enjoy a few can of beers while watching baseball in my man-cave.

Gas has been under $2 in Clinton and Bloomington for the last 2 weeks. As low as $1.65 in Bloomington according to my dad. For some reason, we haven't gotten under that in Decatur.

I'm feeling the same way as my esteemed colleague, net. As long as numbers rise, I think we're out. And once they fall, they'll want two weeks beyond that to make sure.

We have no indication here one way or another, but that's my gut feeling.
