I believe my parents had this conversation over coffee, but about rock music.

I think that's probably the difference between your experience and theirs.Teetime wrote:I believe my parents had this conversation over coffee, but about rock music.

I meant that they conversed with each other about how everyone in my generation that listened to rock was doomed to a life of servitude to the good kids that enjoyed Pat Boone and Bing Crosby.
Our brains would obviously turn to mush.
Or did you get that was my point?

I interpreted it as they talked to you about the "dangers".Teetime wrote:I meant that they conversed with each other about how everyone in my generation that listened to rock was doomed to a life of servitude to the good kids that enjoyed Pat Boone and Bing Crosby.

And, given the people your generation has elected to lead our country, maybe your brains did turn to mush.

Re: week 4 of the football season and nearly 2 days without a single post
So HI, any update on the job search? Kids start shutting down this time of year, and what was a downer year can become almost unbearable moving forward. I'm looking hard, and if one particular career change doesn't line up, I won't give up b/c of the deteriorating situation of lack of student accountability. Do you have admin who refuse to discipline kids and try to put it back on their own staff? I sit at my desk during prep and just wonder how on earth I ended up at a place where consequences are taboo as there are expectations of behavior at every other school I'm aware of.

I had hoped to be able to post some good news as I've had some interviews over the past month, but still waiting to hear about them. One is outside education and I'd really like to get it, but it's a very slow moving process. I mean, I applied for it before Thanksgiving.
I'll send you a PM with some more detailed info. When things settle down with me, I'll probably just post the same thing on here, but for now, I'm just trying to find my way.

Our admins don't put discipline back on the teachers unless they think it was bogus (i.e. sending a kid to the office for talking) and they ask what we did to stop the behavior. Now if it is something like a student threatening another student, teacher, or a major infraction, they always follow through. But the small things definitely fall on us but if it gets out of hand the admins always help out.

Just got an email from a grandma about a kid having been absent on March 1 and wondering if I could get him, or her, the missing assignment from that day. The kid's been here every day since the 1st.
Oh, and he's an 18 year old Senior.

Today before a school a girl walks into my room with a skirt on. Female teacher goes "That seems a little short don't you think?" I don't know, I didn't really see it. Are you going to send her to the office for a possible dress code violation? HELLLLL NO. That is not a hill I'm dying on. She looks at me and says that's kind of your job isn't it?
Nope. It is not my job to tell HS girls what they should and shouldn't wear. What is the upside in it? I could write for days about the downsides for my future and career (whatever that may be), but what is the benefit of it to me? Is it worth pissing everyone off for 2 inches? Is it worth becoming a viral sensation? Nope.
If you feel so strongly about it, you send her down.

Great question. No idea the answer. This is the second time in the past 3 weeks a female teacher has asked me if I'm going to refer a girl for dress code stuff. Only thing I can think of is they want me to be the bad guy.ging wrote:any reason why the FEMALE teacher didn't send her to the office?

The first two pieces of information I received in teacher training (and I mean real information, not the bullshit colleges give you) were to never have your classroom door closed if you are working alone with a female student and to never call out a female student on a dress code violation. The first one kind of speaks for itself and the second one is easy for the female student to turn it into "Well, why are you looking there anyway!"

i'm not sure why this is such a big deal. i send girls out of pe more than i like for wearing too short of gym shorts in pe. the same for spandex. 'go get dressed!'
if a girl said to me, "Well, why are you looking there anyway!", i'd reply it's pretty hard to miss your 75% uncovered thighs. no biggie to me.

I think there's a difference between a standardized middle school PE uniform and me telling an 18 year old girl her everyday clothes are too risque. I know, by code there shouldn't be, but I think there is. Besides, I'm definitely not kicking that hornet's nest on my way out of town.net wrote:i'm not sure why this is such a big deal. i send girls out of pe more than i like for wearing too short of gym shorts in pe. the same for spandex. Oh, I totally agree, Net. It should be no big deal. I'm not saying I totally turn a blind eye to it. It just works out to be the opposite of HI's example as I point it out to a female teacher or one of our female associates and have them handle it.

In driver's ed they tell you that under NO circumstances should you ever driver a female without someone else in the car. I pretty much carry that over to my classroom as well. Risk analysis wise, it just isn't worth it to do that.wolverine55 wrote:The first two pieces of information I received in teacher training (and I mean real information, not the bullshit colleges give you) were to never have your classroom door closed if you are working alone with a female student and to never call out a female student on a dress code violation. I will add that our students do very well in this regard. I think I've seen a girl wear something that registered to me as a violation maybe 5 times in my six years teaching at Keokuk and can't recall a male student ever wearing anything that I felt the need to report.

At CG we had far more male violations than we did female it seemed. For a couple years, these kind of shirts seemed to be popular with the guys.wolverine55 wrote:I will add that our students do very well in this regard. we have standardized pe uniforms, but the majority of kids supply their own clothes.
i also don't think that there's a lot of difference in telling a girl with newly raging hormones than a snotty high school girl that their clothes are inappropriate. jmo.

I would wager the difference is in parental response.net wrote:Head Idiot wrote:I think there's a difference between a standardized middle school PE uniform and me telling an 18 year old girl her everyday clothes are too risque. Just saw an add on Simply Hired for a Janitor at Romantix (local porn store)in Decatur. Their mission statement states-
Everything is guest service! Guests come first. Drop everything to greet and help your guests. Do your best to ensure your guests are satisfied and know that you are all-powerful in the ways of guest service.
