my jog thru central illinois

Post by wilky on Mon Jan 29, 2018 6:33 pm

so this Saturday I headed south out of the nether regions of Bloomington down 51 to Decatur to attend a class. Man there is not much along that stretch of road. 2 things caught my eye. One was that every town in the area has to hate Maroa and their nice football field and blinky speed limit sign that says how fast you are going. They are noticeably a higher socio-economical status then their nearby peers. Secondly the brightly green bar called irish circle in Wapella. I couldn't stop thinking about it during class and had my self talked into trying it on the way home but I found the menu and they didn't have corn beer. How can you serve food, be an irish bar, and not serve corn beef?

The people in Maroa keep all of the corned beef in that area and won't allow the second class citizens to partake.

I had to look up where Wapella is. I have been to Hayworth, by never down the road to Wapella.

Even been to Towanda? That was the last place I ever saw a gas pump with "flip card" pricing instead of digital.

When I started my teaching career at Litchfield, there was a small town/village south of Litchfield called Walshville.
It was like the Camelot of Montgomery and Macoupian counties - a mystical place that existed but no one ever went there or knew where it was. Two Sundays ago on my way back from Lambert Field to Springfield, I fulfilled a career long dream, I got off at exit 52 (Litchfield), and looked for and found Walshville. It had a water tower, two churches, but unlike another mystical Illinois hamlet, Goofy Ridge, no bars. Sorry NET.

Speaking of Heyworth, one of my favorite exits - the "Shirley you can't be serious?" exit.

I missed this during my hiatus and for some reason, just thought about it yesterday.

1.  Pretty much everyone does hate Maroa, but little of it has to do with the football field.
2.  I'm pretty sure the Irish Circle is named after the high concentration of Irish people that had at one time settled Wapella.  I don't know that it has anything to do with an Irish theme.  IIRC it was because the group of guys that gathered to drink there were called the Irish Circle for their social circle gatherings.  There's a road east of town famously known as the Irish Row. There isn't anything really special about it.  I've been in a few times.  Pretty much like every other dive bar in Central Illinois.
3.  The house a block or two north of the Irish Circle is painted purple because in 68 or 69 when the tornado went through town the guy who lived there lost all the siding on his house so he painted it purple from then on out in case it happened again he could find the siding.
4.  If you go out in the country about 2-3 miles north and a mile east of the IC, there's a barn where some eccentric dude put a car on top of the barn.  Reinforced it and everything.  It's still up there.  Don't know when he put it up there, but it's been up there my whole life.
