Milford is out of the VVC for Football

Post by general maximus on Thu Jan 18, 2018 1:06 pm

Word may not be out officially yet, but Milford will be playing in an 8 man league. The VVC is going to be looking for replacement games this year.

I know we will be open week 8. Our AD is already looking in the traditional places. If you hear of anything, let us know.

This is effective 2018.

The News-Gazette had a story about St. Thomas More going 8-man as well.

Was that in addition to Judah going 8 man?

No prob, but I wondered if they were moving that direction as well. †I think some of the numbers at STM were not what they were experiencing just a few short years ago.

I would venture that there is a connection between Milford and Judah heading that way toward 8 man.

As I told coach Albaugh today. I am happy for him, but annoyed at Milford. It is going to cause a problem for scheduling. Week 8 has some openings. I wonder if Sally N D, Collinsville, or Sandburg would wanna play? Kidding for sure. We are already talking to anyone else that has open dates listed.

I am proud of our AD. He is on top of it already.

so you'd rather have had milford stay 11 man and then run out of players and forfeit to you wk 8?

Simply no, but there are other options.

My issue is that the open date is problematic on many levels.

How many times have you had a open date in your schedule?

Running out of players in some instances a choice. They have had enough players in the past, just not enough position specific. We are getting younger level games cancelled with a high frequency. Instead of moving a couple lineman to TE or FB, they just cancel. We are playing schools like Unity at the JV level instead of schools our size. Trust me, this is not good for our program, but we have to play more than 5 underclass games. Heck, we are playing some teams 2 or 3 times at the younger levels.

Ive heard Hoopeston was waiting to hear on Milford and the 8 man deal and are possibly looking at ending their co-op with Schlarman and others and enter the world of 8 man itself.

I would try to schedule as many of those 8-man teams as possible.

It has to be an advantage to have 11 guys vs 8 guys.....discuss.

I think some of the numbers at STM were not what they were experiencing just a few short years ago.

Is STM seriously considering 8 man football or are they still OK for 11 man?

I spoke directly to their head coach a few weeks ago and he felt strongly their numbers were on the rise. He was happy with the direction they were going. STM is not in danger of dropping 11-man football at present.

Sorry that I misspoke earlier - as the General pointed out, I meant to say Judah Christian.

I prefer to think of myself as ecumenical...

Slightly more on topic, I'm not sure that 8-man football is good for Illinois High School football. I really do mean I am not sure - maybe it is good, but I'm not seeing a solid argument right now.

I look at it as a Band-Aid. It might buy another 10 years of football but I think the downward trend will continue.

This would be unfortunate for sure. After speaking with some folks in the know, That direction was not discussed. But then again, Milford really did not discuss it with the conference prior to their exodus. My question is will they remain in the VVC for other sports. I guess that will play itself out. Does a school have a responsibility to conference to fill out the teams for all sports. Some of our schools have wrestling, and some do not.

I agree with delta.

I donít think the way to get more kids involved is to limit how many get to play.

Hitter, you were on the mark as usual.

My AD talked to the Hoopeston AD and stated that they are doing the paperwork to continue the COOP with their other schools. Schlarman and Armstrong combine to make 633 for HAASP.

However, they were invited to go to the 8 man league and declined.

I submit the "Trying to Survive Downstate Withering Conf" as the merger's name.

That would have happened a long time ago, but the powers at be did not want to leave HA and Schlarman out in case they wanted to return. I was all for some kind of merger/agreement then as well. But now, I am really not sure I would like to be driving up to the far north schools. I think the closest trip is PBL for us.

At the county basketball tourney this I was told that Milford is just trying this for a year or two and going to try and go back to 11 man football as soon as possible.

This is directly in contrast to what others that I trust more have said regarding Milfords long term plans.

In the event of a merge of some sort and assuming that Hoopeston folds up shop or goes 8 man in the future there would be 7 SVC schools and 5 VVC Schools.

SVC
Seneca
Dwight
Momence
Central
Iroquois West
Watseka
PBL

VVC
Bismarck
Salf Fork
Oakwood
Westville
Georgetown

Id send IW or Watseka to the South and have 2 Divisions of 6. Id have 2 Crossovers and leave 2 Open Weeks. No matter your either going to have to travel at some point for a crossover game or an open date against another school it just is what it is these days. I also wouldnt be surprised if in the near future IW is playing 8 man football.
