I see that as result of key individuals that influence the others around them to rise to their levels. In your XC example... What Neil has at MS can be directly linked to Jim Acklin at SJO - his "15pts" license plates really said it all - his runners took places 1-5 at state meet!! their motivation... to make varsity team they had to beat Jim...  Even in the girls XC realm, Sandy Menele at Unity and John King at MS paved the way for Bonnie M. at M-S by producing quality teams for many consecutive years.  A tradition was spawned and cultivated.  Others in the area saw what was going on and made efforts to catch up or exceed them, thus producing the hot spot.

That said - you cant make chicken salad out of chicken feces and good athletes will make a great coach but in any sport.

But, If you do not have a champion for excellence in the front, It aint gonna happen.

As a XC/Track stats nerd, St. Joes has never scored 15 points at the state meet.  46 is their best score which was 91-92 season.  Must have done it in a sectional or regional?

Ack's license plate was/is "46 PTS"

Althoff sends six champions and a third-place finisher to state, including three looking to defend titles. One is looking to extend his state-record of pins and another looking to add to the tech falls record. The third - twin of the tech-fall specialist - will be wrestling with his brother at U of I next year.

A two-time state champion and three-time finalist, Chase Bittle is the top seed in the Class 1A 126-pound weight class. Bittle owns the state record for most pins in a career with 142.

Danny Braunagel, who is 50-0 this season and will take a 99-match winning streak into his first-round match Thursday, is the top-seed in the 160-pound class. He broke the mark of 60 technical falls that was held by Tyler Schilson, of Warsaw, and Nate Jozsa, of Argenta-Oreana back in late January and I do not know his current total. Of his 41 wins (as of then), all have been by pin, technical fall or major decision. He has also won all of his matches by at least eight points.

His twin brother Zac Braunagel is 47-2 and the top seed in the 182-pound class. Both Braunagel brothers won state titles a year ago.

That doesn't sound fair. They should have to wrestle someone.

Prairie Central has the Hoselton brothers who will both wrestle for a 1a state title. Drew is a senior and was a runner-up last year at 160lbs. He will wrestle against Lena-Stockton's Rahveon Valentine for 1st Place at 170lbs. Younger brother Brandon is only a freshman and pinned the #1 ranked wrestler at 195lbs yesterday in only 33 seconds. He will wrestle senior Justin Coggins from Clifton Central for the championship later today.

Our 170 Jacob Smith had a hell of a match last night against Valetine lost 3-2 in the Ultimate Tie Breaker whatever the heck that was.

Hopefully History repeats itself tonight as Coggins beat Hoselton 2-0 at Regionals. He won Sectionals as well but Hoselton slipped up there.

UTB is pretty crazy. Doesn't happen often but is very exciting when it does.

It is the 4th OT period and lasts 30 seconds. The guy who scored first in regulation (or who wins the coin flip if no points were scored in regulation) gets to choose either top or bottom. If the guy on the bottom escapes or gets a reversal, he wins. If the guy on top can ride out the 30 seconds or get near-fall points or a pin, he wins. It's pretty awesome.
