Playoff Games

Post by Head Skin on Tue Nov 07, 2017 2:18 pm

Reading a thread at IHSS got me thinking. How many playoff games have you watched live or coached in?

My numbers are estimates as I canít remember exactly. I would imagine itís on the low side as I know there were a lot of times Iíd watch one on Fri and another Sat.

Watched- 93
Coached- 14- 8 as HC
Played in- 1

Iím sure some of our more decorated posters dwarf these numbers, but what do you have?

Watched? Probably in the neighborhood of 50. Couldn't begin to put a number on it. Scouted so many during my first 12 years under Darlington...

Coached? 36, including 2 in indoor professional

Played? 1- 1987 vs. Marian Central Catholic

Watched: 20--ballpark figure, maybe not even that high. Once my team is done for the season, I'm done generally speaking, unless there is a very convenient game for me to get to.

Coached: 10--but only one in the last 11 years of coaching Embarassed

Played: 0-- Embarassed

I followed Meta closely for 14 years. They went to the Finals seven of those, so probably watched about 50, plus attended various other 4A/5A playoff games.

My freshman year (1973) was the last Manual/Central Turkey Day game, so Coach Lavery kept frosh-seniors over, and everybody got at least one snap during that game. The next year began the playoffs and I was brought up as a soph for my one and only playoff game (loss to Norm Comm).

Never coached football, but won a Illinois Youth Rugby State Title coaching my nephew in 2012.

I began to question this 24 number over my breakfast. Went to the record book.

Son #1:
2000 lost in the quarters at JCA (3)
2001 lost in the quarters at Metamora, I think. It was hard to recognize under six inches of water (3)
Son #2:
2002 lost in the quarters to Althoff, last second TD catch by current Southeast High coach. (3)
2003 lost in the State Championship to JCA †(5)
2004 lost in the 2nd round to Jacksonville :-( †(2)
Son #3:
2005 Won State Championship over R.I. Alleman (5)
2006 Won State Championship over Woodstock Marian (5)
2007 lost in first round to Providence Catholic (1)

Total was actually 27 playoff games. Now if I could just remember my sons names.

Coached - 39, Teetime, looking at what your sons accomplished, I coached son no. 1

Watched -- Do state title games on TV count as playoff games watched? If so, then somewhere in between 150 and 200. In person, I can probably count with two hands.

Coached -- N/A

Played -- N/A

I was pretty sure you did.

My oldest son was a 275 lb, 6'5" offensive lineman named Drew Anderson. He had the size on the other two sons, but not the football IQ they had.

He was on an offensive line that included Mike Stevens (even bigger than my kid), Josh Norris, who walked on at the U of I and became a starter, and one other really big kid who I can't remember. Jon Sundquist was the QB, Teddy Wise's son was a bruising RB that played in college, SIU I think.

What were your assignments on that staff?

t
I remember your son. That was a good group of young men. Josh Norris was a very good O and D lineman. He walked on at Illinois for educational reasons instead of getting a scholarship to play at a smaller school. He ended up getting scholarship and was a two year starter. They nicknamed him Buckshot because he was all over the place. We were big. For the pre game coin toss, Ken would send our biggest kids and J. T. Wise (6'2, 235 FB, who did start at SIU for 4 years) for the coin flip. There was only one game that year where our opponents looked us eye to eye for the coin flip - infamous flooded field game. I coached DB's and was the DC.

Watched: †91 of the 93 Metamora playoff games (missed 1975 East St. Louis Lincoln and 1976 Momence)
† † † † † † † As a "neutral fan"- probably way more than 50, perhaps nearing 100

All this proves is that I am really old. Sad

Coached: 0
Played: 0 missed playoffs by two points my junior year. Ironically a loss to East Peoria doomed us. Evil or Very Mad
