2 kewanee high schools?

Post by wilky on Tue Oct 24, 2017 10:54 am

purely a logistics question. I had always heard of Kewanee weatherfield, but never just plain Kewanee. i look it up and it appears that there is a small school, and a small school in the same town less than 3 miles apart? is weatherfield a private school? i always thought they were public

Both schools are public, but separate school districts. Kewanee annexed Wethersfield, IL in the 1920's, but the schools remained separate. they have tried to push a consolidation through many times, and always fail. Wethersfield coops in some sports with Annawan, 13 miles north.

Below is a link of the history of Wethersfield

Annawan is a lovely spot on I-80 heading west. I remember stopping at a truck stop to exchange game tape there once way back.
Pretty sure both are public schools.

kewanee high school and wethersfield high school are both public schools in kewanee. they are located maybe 2 miles apart from one another.

it makes no sense in 2017 that in a town with 9,000 people, give or take, they have 2 public high schools.  but here we are.

similar to streator and streator woodland, which are both public as well.

I remember in college driving through Monmouth and was shocked they had 3 high schools. At the time, it was Monmouth HS, Monmouth United, and Monmouth Warren

The Monmouth part of Warren and United was only there as an IHSA thing to show what town they were near. Like Stanford Olympia or Manlius Bureau Valley. No one in the community calls that, but others know them as that because of the IHSA.

As a resident of the town for less than 1 year, I found it to be a very unique situation. The folks at KHS as opposed to WHS do not like to be confused by outsiders. For different reasons.

Division street is mostly the border.

ive been to both Kewanee and annawan. my good friend has a vending business and he frequents those towns.

I had no idea of the dual public high schools though, I am very surprised the tax payers have not demanded a consolidation.

Kind of like Morris having 2 grade school districts in a town of 13,000

I remember having this same conversation a few years back. Wethersfield HS is the more rural part of Kewanee correct?

Wethersfield is also in a separate Township from the rest of Kewanee. Wethersfield folks seem to like the small school and low s2t ratios.

Kewanee once had a Catholic high school, Visitation, which closed in the 1950s or 60s. Located west of downtown.

2 public districts. Both hate one another. Tried to pass a consolidation a couple years ago. Didn't pass. Districts are divided by of course "division street". Wethersfield coops in some sports (including football) with annawan who is like 10 miles up rte 78.
