Jersey numbers...

Post by 19delta on Fri Sep 29, 2017 1:56 pm

What was your high school or college jersey # and why?

High school, I was #71. Pretty much because there weren't many lineman numbers left. In college, I wore #76 because #71 was taken by an older guy and I wanted the same jersey # for all four years.

I was 63 - that's what I was given as a freshman so I kept it. Back story - I TOLD them I was done growing (JUST under 6 foot and was 170 pounds) when I showed up that August day in 1987. I'm a fullback, I said.

NAH - your sister is 6-3, you'll keep growing. (She was 6-5 with her BIG HAIR back then.)

Coach, I'm adopted - and I've had hair on my nuts since I was 10. I'm not growing any more.

Shut up, Last Name. You are a pulling guard.

Sure enough, I never got taller but I was our best lineman freshman and sophomore year. But the 6-5 guard in my class was tabbed to start junior year. He went to Sally N D ...

I had a different number every year of high school. I just took what was given to me.

52 in high school and I know there was a reason, but it must not be very important as I honestly don't remember it.

55 in college for a similar reason to Delta: 52 was already taken by an upperclassmen and when he graduated, I decided it made more sense to just keep 55 instead of changing numbers.

65 as a freshman in HS.
70 as a sophomore.
77 as a sr.

Why? I was a guard as a fr and guards wore 60s. Moved to T as a soph. Went to 77 as a jr because the jersey was an xl and I had outgrown a L.

78 in college all 4 years because the kid right in front of me took 77 and I wasn’t obviously too attached to any specific number.

I was number 57 in high school. Freshmen year I asked my mom what year she was born she said 1957 so I picked 57 as my number. Year's later as it turns out she lied to me and was really born in 1955. Laughing Laughing Laughing

High School:
Freshman: 66. Just thought it was one of the cool numbers left. Also Joe Jacoby wore it... loved him as a player.
Sophomore: 99/66 Coaches wanted me to play some TE to start. Hated all the choices as the only jerseys that fit me were low 90's or 99. Went with 99 due to it's similarity to 66. Then ended up back at Tackle, back with 66.
Junior: 66
Senior: 73... I didn't fit in the #66 jersey after my junior year. I had put on 20 pounds and 2 inches.

College:
Freshman: #68 Assigned
Sophomore: #67 Assigned
Junior: Retired

I was assigned '31' as a freshman fullback. Had to wear 33 my junior year cuz the senior FB also wore 31.

BirdWatcher Jr wore #60 all thru high school. When BabyBird came into Meta, I asked the coaches to give him 60 as well. So when the frosh head coach tried giving him his "older brothers number" he refused it. Pretty gutsy for a frosh. But he insisted on having his own number... ANY number except 60. He wore 68 all thru HS, then 43 all thru college since he switched to fullback.

In rugby your position determines your number. So as a scrum half, I wore 9. My opposing scrum half in a match also would wear nine. That's where the term "opposing number" comes from when talking like a Brit... Wink Post-match, you find the guy wearing the same number as you and buy him a beer, or ten....

I always loved John Elway & Joe Theisman and Jody Davis growing up. I was a QB and a Catcher, so I wanted to be #7 in those sports. Plus, it seemed like most of the players I liked to watch were all #7. When I couldn't be #7 (basketball), I tried to get my number to add up to 7 (34, 25).

HS:
Freshman FB - #15 (didn't have any single digits in the jerseys)
So-Sr FB - #7

College:
Fr - Sr - #7

Baseball I was #7 all years from Soph HS - Sr. College.

HS I think I was a different number every year. Went from 54-51-50-53. I only chose 53 because it was brand new and nobody had worn it before me.

College my freshman year I was 59...one of the worst lineman numbers ever. Then I transferred and was able to finish out my career in #53

That would be me. Senior year - the Bears had a Guard by the name of Revie Sorey...he was number 69. The guy next to me was #65 for Noah Jackson. I was #63 in college it was assigned...but also they year I was born..so was nice.

I shared this on Huey's already, but one of the years I coached at Unity-Payson, we had a kid request #69 whose last name was Klitz. We had a somewhat different system for uniforms as we had a local dealer who could get our colors of jerseys for cheap and then do the screen printing of the names and numbers himself. When we gave him the list that included #69 Klitz, he originally refused to make the jersey because he assumed we were pulling one over on him.

I always wore #88. We chose jersey's by last name and I was near the bottom of the list and since I played TE I needed a receiver eligible number and it was the only one left.

Basketball I was 54 because in 7th grade it was the only uniform that fit me.

Sophomore- #98 because the numbers got higher as the sizes got larger. Mad

Junior- #86 because we had so many linemen that they ran out of traditional lineman numbers

Senior- #62 because it was the first one my coach grabbed when I requested one to wear for my senior pictures being taken. I had requested #72. Ironically that number eventually got assigned to the guy who was dating the girl I wanted to. Talk about an extra kick in the nuts. Evil or Very Mad

I was a 167 lb. defensive end. #18

Also, third string quarterback, thankfully never had to play a down as qb.
