Ging,
To add to that, How many schools that I have never even heard of keep sending him things in the mail. Not just quick letters or post cards, but large full color packets with pull outs and other media. No wonder it costs that much!

These schools have the same idea in that we will give you X amount of money. They are touting out of pocket cost. The amount they promote for that out of pocket cost is minus the gigantic loan amount they are gonna pass on to whomever.

Only 5,000 family Contribution.
25,000 in Scholarships
20,000 in Loans
And they forget to remind you of all the Fees, travel, and incidentals college will incur.

I know we gotta pay to play, but some of the costs are misleading to kids and prob a lot of parents.

which i think is the whole point.

and i could spin this thread in another direction by talking about D3 athletics and how many schools use the "allure" of playing "at the next level" to get kids in their doors, many of whom can't afford it.  but i won't go there. Laughing

College and the debt racket is out of control. So is the education profession in telling kids they have to have a college education. An education 60% or so of them will never utilize. But, they’ll be in debt because of it for 30ish years.

D211 kids can go to Harper for free starting this year - if they had a certain GPA/course background.

Harper, in turn, has a pre-engineering program that once completed, gives you a spot in the U of I engineering program.

After reading today's posts, I was curious what I payed vs. tuition today. What I found is absolutely ridiculous. And I am a Graduate of the prestigious Blackburn College Beaver work program - designed to REDUCE tuition costs. If you look at today's numbers, it's incredible.

Tuition
Tuition
Student Services Fee
Technology Fee
Less Work Credit
Total Tuition
Room Charge (Double Occupancy)
Board Charge (175 Meals each Semester)
Total Resident Charges

$21,582
$350
$60
$5,500
$16,492
$4,448
$3,212
$24,152

Historical Tuition Prices
The cost to attend college is continually rising. The table below will provide perspective as to the historical tuition increases reported for Blackburn College and what it has cost to attend in past years.
Illinois Resident Out of State Annual Percent Change
2012 $16,076 $16,076 13.4%
2011 $14,176 $14,176 -0.8%
2010 $14,286 $14,286 5%
2009 $13,610 $13,610 -13.7%
2008 $15,770 $15,770 0.4%
2007 $15,700 $15,700 4.4%
2006 $15,040 $15,040 3%
2005 $14,600 $14,600 45.9%
2004 $10,010 $10,010 6.3%
2003 $9,420 $9,420 8%
2002 $8,720 $8,720 5.4%
2001 $8,275 $8,275 3%
2000 $8,035 $8,035 2%
1999 $7,880 $7,880 6.1%
1998 $7,425 $7,425 8.4%
1997 $6,850 $6,850 5.4%
1996 $6,500 $6,500 -23.5%
1995 $8,500 $8,500 8.7%
1994 $7,820 $7,820 0.9%

So tuition has gone up almost 400% since I enrolled. The debt I graduated with would be the same that a student would accumulate after less than 3 semesters.

This will sound bad, but I had the "good fortune" of my ex-father-in-law passing away last fall. He was a successful business owner (mechanical engineering field) - considerable assets (not wealthy, but very comfortable). He left each of his daughters a percentage of the business - and a chunk of cash.

The girls' mom was the only daughter who worked for him - she now has 36 percent ownership, plus the warehouse he owned, for which the company pays rent.

From the lump sum, she committed to pay ALL COLLEGE COSTS except for the "student loans," which are $5500, $6500, $7500 and $7500 for four years. That still leaves them with $27000 on the hook each!

(I'm paying $100 a week to each, so it won't be that high after they graduate - and I'm still saving $100 a week compared to child support!!!)

That is good work SIFB. Truly supports what many of us thought and what Skin typed. I am struggling with how that is all going to work out for my Senior very soon.

Thank goodness he is not wanting to go to a school that will "allow" him to further his football career. (He is not good enough, but many schools would love to have him balance out their GPA and pay tuition)

Tuition History
What was tuition at Monmouth College five, ten, fifteen or twenty years ago? Hop into our time machine and take a look. Pay attention to how aggressive the school has been with price increases in the past as it provides indication as to how the school may raise tuition in the next few years. Historical tuition and fees for all available data years back to 1987 follows.

Year Tuition Annual Increase
2012 $28,650 6.5%
2011 $26,900 7.8%
2010 $24,950 4%
2009 $24,000 9.1%
2008 $22,000 4.3%
2007 $21,100 4.5%
2006 $20,200 4.4%
2005 $19,350 4%
2004 $18,600 4.7%
2003 $17,760 4.5%
2002 $17,000 3.8%
2001 $16,370 4.1%
2000 $15,720 4%
1999 $15,120 4.9%
1998 $14,420 3.3%
1997 $13,965 3.8%
1996 $13,460 2.7%
1995 $13,100 1.6%
1994 $12,900 0.8%
1993 $12,800 2.8%

Current tuition at MC is $36k. Total cost is around $45k. I paid around $7k a year total after grants and scholarships in 1994.

My wife and I are both Illinois Wesleyan Alums. Very grateful our son wants to go to a bigger school. Tuition and fees have risen almost 600% since I graduated.

The fact tuition alone is 45k at Knox is ridiculous. That place is a hole. And that's not just because I'm an MC guy.

BabyBird graduated from MC in 2011, in 4 years. I paid $100,000 for the whole thing, books, tuition, etc., over 4 years. He rec'd some 'discounts' off MSRP for grades. Does anyone other than Saudi princes pay for full retail tuition price? BW Junior split two years at NIU and two at Bradley (lived at home last 2), and it cost $80k for 4 years, graduating in 2009.

I think I found Illinois is about 22k. That would be about double the sticker price from when I started in 2001. I honestly figured it had gone higher.

I hired three - training starts today at 7:00 a.m.

One showed up.

Called the other two - one nonchalantly answers phone - yeah, I'll be there. (WHEN?) It depends on traffic - I'm leaving now, it might be an hour.

Second one I called and it went to voice mail after three rings.

There’s a way to solve this issue, but I will save that thread meltdown for myself.

Don't try to change the subject of this thread.

It's about the high cost of college.

Or, tamping down the life expectations of youngsters.

Or, the value of hiring hot babes that can't work over fat ones that won't work.

Inline with this ... my trainer just told me that they were all taking about motherhood and one admitted to breastfeeding her son until he was 5.5 years old.
