$14.90 an Hour Plus Full Benefits

Post by crusader on Wed Sep 13, 2017 12:55 pm

I'm hiring for the second time this summer to accommodate company growth and I'm paying nicely for this type of position. The benefits include vacation, sick days, personal days, medical (full for employee - half for family), dental, vision, life, long-term disability and 401k match of two percent.

You would not believe the poor resumes I receive. Of those with decent resumes, I then filter based on phone interview. If that goes well, onsite interview that includes a reading/speaking test, basic grammar and an address comparison test (looking for details) - that is 95 questions in 16 minutes. We then give the Wonderlic (12 minutes) and a Reid honesty test.

Final "test' is FBI fingerprint background check. When I tell some candidates this, they end the call right there.

I've had grown folks who cannot read and they worked county jobs here!

One that made me sad was a very polite young man yesterday. He came dressed properly, but was two minutes late. As soon as I opened the door, he apologized and pointed to his truck. "Sir, my fire blew on the highway but I drove it on the rim to get here."

I was super impressed - completely forgot he was late and was "rooting for him" to pass the tests.

I'll be damned if he only completed 24 of 95 questions (with an extra minute because I liked him). I can only accept 16 wrong for that test. He also only finished five questions on the Wonderlic - needed 16 to pass. Two questions he finished were wrong.

WTF????? This is not an isolated incident. I have people with associate degrees that don't do much better.

We as a country have to do better than this. I don't have the answers, but I have questions!

Not sure about that ... but my noon appointment no-call, no-showed.

I JUST hired a woman who has a good work history, but had a cancer surgery earlier in the year and as such, is on government assistance. The background check cost $65 and we have them pay this but provide me a receipt and I give them $105 to cover gas/time regardless of test outcome.

This woman does not have the money until 9/27 ... so I took a risk and gave it out of my own pocket. I hope she does not screw me over.

My 1:30 appointment no-call, no-showed.

It was suggested to me that the kid who did not finish or pass any test just needed to say he went on an interview. There is NO WAY someone does not progress further than 24/95 questions in the allotted time. That never even crossed my mind that someone would intentionally tank an interview, but apparently, that's a thing now.

Looking at resume and this person has had eight jobs since 2014 and she even left Amazon.

Will not be calling her.

I also am adding to my team and hiring. After my last hiring episode several months back where I received dozens of 100% unqualified resumes, I wrote the following into this most recent job listing:

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU DO NOT MEET ALL OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

And then I listed about 8-10 requirements.

Nevertheless, the majority of resumes I am receiving are not even remotely related to the job or to any of the requirements I listed, much less 8-10.

I'm convinced that there are people drawing unemployment compensation checks who have to prove that they are actively looking for work, and they submit applications regardless of whether or not they are qualified for the position.

I think you are right, RM. The kid with the tire issue called me EARLY the next day after getting transferred to me by HR even though I assured him I'd be calling him regardless of test outcome.

He seemed to have me on speaker and said, "I interviewed with COMPANY yesterday afternoon and I wanted to follow up with you."

I explained that he did not pass the tests and wished him well.

He quickly thanked me and ended the call.

I have no idea if that was recorded or if it was for the proof to the state that he was indeed job hunting.

This is the job description - one of five since August 2015 - I saw in a resume today:
Crew Member
McDonald's - February 2016 to February 2016
Unorganized and Unprofessional

Also got a cover letter from someone stating they were applying for a senior management position and that based on the job description and review of our company (unnamed - generic) that he knows he is the ideal candidate. Previous work history was in food service.

YES - I'm not sure if that was their commentary on the job, but I copy/pasted direct from the resume.

Some of these are unbelievable.

And people wonder why people want to hire illegals.

Americans are, on average, exactly what the Japanese said we were 20 years ago.

Another "tactic" I've found is a decent resume but when I call, wrong number. They still have proof they sent a resume ... just not getting calls.
