Soda vs Pop

Post by center on Tue Jun 27, 2017 1:00 pm

Soda or pop?

You order a soft drink beverage of Diet Coke or Mt.Dew. What do you call it?

I called it pop growing up in Amboy. First teaching job is 45 minutes away in Lasalle Peru and they act like they have never heard of pop. All call it soda.

I call it beer.

Nobody in Springfield says "pop"....unless they grew up in Amboy.

Since the great weight loss 15 years ago I now say Diet whatever the drink is just to make sure I get Diet. Increasingly I just say water.

I don't think I ever said pop or soda when ordering, but I generally said pop in other settings.

I grew up in Monticello and my family was from the Fairbury area and we always called it Soda.

While I lived in NC, I remember I ordered a "Coke," and the waitress replied "What kind?" At that point I decided it was just easier ordering a beer.

I was taught that this is called a proprietary eponym. it is a branding thing, sometimes colloquial, where the popular (first) brand name of a product becomes synonymous for that product. because coke was the first carbonated brown drink, all others to follow were referred to "coke" for awhile. my grandma used to call all refrigerators, a Frigidaire. always confused me cause we were clearly looking at a Kenmore, but in her time Frigidaire was the thing. just like any tissue paper was called a Kleenex, even if it wasn't a Kleenex brand. aspirin, Xerox, qtip, lazy boy are other examples.

I have always called it pop

Wait a minute....is aspirin a brand name? I always thought it was a generic name for a pain reliever that had certain stuff in it. I didn't and still don't know the name of the "stuff"

How does BAYER get away with saying "genuine aspirin" right under it's name.

Could PEPSI, on it's logo, say "Pepsi......genuine coke"?

Could PUFFS say on it's box "genuine kleenex"?

I looked it up.

It IS a brand name. It is owned by BAYER, and that's why they can say "genuine aspirin" on a BAYER bottle.

I always thought that location was more of Crack kind of neighborhood. I could be wrong I didn't figure it to be a best practice to hang around that hood very much.

On topic: Always said "pop". In Ottawa where I grew up, we had a Dr Pepper bottling facility just a block away. We could go get a warm pop off the line right after it was bottled. Each glass bottle was 5 cents plus the 5 cents for the deposit on the bottle. If we found a couple quarters, we usually would get as many Dr Peppers as our bellies could handle. Still love Diet Dr Pepper to this day.

During orientation at Caterpillar almost 40 years ago, they stressed that we made "bulldozers" or better yet, "track-type tractors." Apparently the term "caterpillar" was becoming like Kleenex or aspirin, and they wanted to protect the brand, even back then.

BTW, we called it "soda" at the caterpilllar plants in East Peoria. Pop was your old man.

Having sold the stuff out of the fountain for 12 years at gas stations (BTW - I will retire from that line of work soon), "pop" is easier to roll off the tongue than the two syllables of "so-da." It's always been "pop" to me, but I've found that sometimes with whatever rolls off my tongue before saying [that] that "soda" becomes easier to say. That's my disorganized speech pattern for'ya.
